Who Tests and How Often?

Under Oregon Law (ORS 330.035), all students who are homeschooled are required to test at the end of grades 3, 5, 8, and 10, with two exceptions:

  1. Students participating in interscholastic activities are required to test annually

  2. Students with disabilities, and an IEP or a PDP that indicates methods other than testing should be used to indicate satisfactory progress

The cost of testing is the responsibility of the family.

About the Test

Here's how it works

TerraNova/CAT 3 full battery pencil-and-paper tests are administered in-person in a group setting. Parents are not permitted in the room with test takers, but may wait outside in the hallway. Time allotted for testing is expected to be about 4 hours - between 9:00AM-1:00PM or 1:00PM-5:00PM - but prepare to be flexible in pick-up time, as students may be dismissed early in the event everyone is done before the time runs out, or may be a bit late in the event that all tests and sample questions take the full time.

Plan to arrive about 10-15 minutes before your testing time. Bring pencils, a snack and water bottle, a calculator (if desired), and a book or something quiet to fill any extra time should your student finish a section early. The test publisher allows for the use of four-function (basic) calculators in the second part of the math exam, but recommends their use during the test only if your student is already accustomed to using a calculator in the course of normal studies.

Tests will be hand-graded, and results mailed directly to the student's family within about 7-10 days. Test answer sheets are retained by us for one year following the testing date. Families are responsible to keep their own records.

After Testing

What Comes Next?

Harvest Heritage Academy does not keep your tests indefinitely. Individual student tests held by us will be destroyed after one year. We also do not upload your pencil-and-paper test results to any online student database, nor forward results to any other entity. Results are mailed directly to the families, who are solely responsible for keeping their own student test scores. ODE asks homeschool families to “retain testing results for your records, and submit to your local ESD when they are requested.” Depending on your ESD, your testing results may never be requested. The Home School Legal Defense Association recommends that families keep student records - including test results - for at least two years.

Keep in mind as you look at the test results that the 50th percentile is your child’s current grade level. Anything above the 50th percentile reflects that your child is working above grade level, just as a lower percentile reflects that they are working below grade level. Per the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) website, “So long as your child tests above the 15th percentile, your local ESD [Education Service District] will not intervene. If your child tests below the 15th percentile, the ESD will ask that you have your child tested the following year.”

Need Testing with Accommodations?

Schedule with a specialist at Bridges Homeschool Resources

Jilene Modlin, EdD, at Bridges Homeschool Resources administers the Terra Nova Survey Form with accommodations.

Per Bridges' website: "Due to the volume of requests, I only administer state testing for students needing alternative settings or testing strategies. I am able to provide accommodations that would be permitted for IEP or 504 and will note these in the comprehensive report. After consulting, testing is administered one-to-one in a mutually decided low-stress location for best testing results."
